Functional Properties of Terry Towels

Image
CURRENT TRENDS IN FASHION TECHNOLOGY & TEXTILE ENGINEERING - JUNIPER PUBLISHERS Abstract The article reviews the functional aspects of terry towels based on past research works. Different types of terry fabrics have been studied for effect of washing on some properties. Towels have been subjected to different washing cycles. After each cycle, the rate of water absorption, total amount of water absorbed, surface and compression characteristics have been assessed by gravimetric absorbency testing system, image analysis methods, and KES-FB 3 system respectively. Different theories and mechanisms of water absorption have been reviewed along with the key factors to improve the water absorption. Both dynamic and static water absorbency along with the initial time lag immerse are found to be the equally important attributes of the water absorbency performance of terry fabrics. The influence of some structural characteristics of terry fabrics on the rate of sorption have been studied...

Chitosan Fiber in Textile Engineering: Advanced Dressing from a Natural Source - Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Fashion Technology -  Juniper publishers Abstract Chitosan is a naturally-occurring starch (polymer) derived from the shells of crustaceans. Chitosan consists of primarily of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucopyranose unit linked by β-(1-4) linkage, and small amount of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues. Chitosan has been found with important and wide properties in agriculture, antimicrobial field, cosmetics, food, medicine, and textile engineering. Many researches showed chitosan had antimicrobial activities on bacteria, postharvest pathogens, plant phytopathogenic fungi, yeast and virus. Here, the authors mentioned beneficial effects of chitosan-based materials in advanced wound dressings. Keywords:  Chitosan; Textile engineering; Wound dressing, Polysaccharide; Crustaceans; Diatoms sponges; Biomedical applications; Biodegradable biopolymer Go to Introduction Chitin (β-(1-4)-poly-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) is widely distributed in nature and is the second mo...

Smart Textile Circuitry and There Application - Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Fashion Technology -  Juniper publishers Introduction Smart Fabric circuits are electrical circuits built on textile substrates. Embroidery conductive thread Into Fabric circuits substrates is a widely used technique. This technique is used to stitch patterns that define Fabric circuit’s traces, component connection pads or sensing surfaces using computer assisted design tools. The conductive patterns can also be done using inkjet-printed techniques of grapheme-based conductive inks. Normally a Fabric circuits are designed to have a low power consumption rate and high input impedance, which is opposite to the conventional requirement of low impedance for component interconnections. Many yarns available in the market can be used for connections and circuit elements. These Include silverized yarns, stainless steel thread, titanium, gold, and tin. Another technique to fabricate textile circuits is to iron a welded circuit to the Fabric circuit’s substrate. Once the...

Emerging Trends in Textile Industry - Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Fashion Technology -  Juniper publishers Introduction The textile industry in India is highly labor intensive and fragmented. Textile industry is growing with increasing demand from both domestic and international markets. The industry is contributing 4 percent to the country’s GDP. Textile Industry contributes 17 percent to the country’s exports, and 21 percent employment. It is the second largest employer after agriculture, is expected to employ around 50 million people in the next five years. India has rich natural resources such as cotton, jute and silk. Indian textile products are known for their designing, embellishment and craft. The industry at present is growing at 12 percent. Indian textile industry presently enjoys a share of 4.7% in world market of textiles and clothing. India is the largest producer of jute in the world, the second largest producer of silk, the third largest in cotton and second largest in cellulosic fibres, and the fifth larges...

Textiles in Tissue Engineering -A Review of Some Significant Trends - Juniper Publishers

Image
Journal of Fashion Technology -  Juniper publishers Abstract The article provides useful insights on some recent and significant trends in the role of textiles in tissue engineering. Textile scaffolds can be found in a variety of application areas in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. In the present study we used electrostatic flocking-a well-known textile technology-to produce scaffolds for tissue engineering of bone. Flock scaffolds stand out due to their unique structure: parallel arranged fibers that are aligned perpendicularly to a substrate, resulting in mechanically stable structures with a high porosity. The benefits offered by microfibrous scaffold architectures fabricated by textile manufacturing techniques are discussed. The problems related to the development of biomaterial fibers (especially from nature-derived materials) ready for textile manufacturing are addressed. Keywords:  Tissue engineering; Textile scaffolds;Microfibrous architectures...
